About the book
Winter light is returning to Slipway Gallery when Sharon Tierney comes in to look at an elephant. She likes its substantial presence, the warm greys across its shoulder and the dark trees behind it. It is the last of Virginia Jenkins’s six paintings still on Amanda Tomlin’s walls.
At home, Sharon keeps the plans for a journey she and her husband never took. Nearly two years after his death, her sister Judi is suggesting a few days away together. Sharon can always find a practical reason to hesitate, but train connections and hotel rooms are only part of the difficulty.
Then the painted elephant turns its head towards a pale opening between the trees. Amanda recognises another impossible change, without knowing what it asks of the woman watching it. She has decisions of her own to make, about a home with Gary and the place her work deserves.
The final book in The Gallery of Unfinished Goodbyes returns to Alderwick for a story of sisterhood, remembered plans and the possibilities that remain alongside a cherished past.
